The Papendrecht Derby

Written by De Twaalfde Man

I had planned to visit the beautiful Stade Saint-Symphorien last Saturday, but last minuted changes in the fixture schedule moved FC Metz from Saturday to Sunday. For that day I already planned to visit Le Derby. So what else you going to do on a Saturday? Well visit some proper non-league football in The Netherlands, The Papendrecht Derby!

It is the Dutch 7th division. The red and black team from the west, the blue and white team from the east. A friendly rivalry between VV Papendrecht and VV Drechtstreek. The host this afternoon did everything to give the 1200 spectators a great football experience. In every aspect how football should be. The away team had a kids corteo from city center, with flag and chants. They were standing in an specially created “away section”. The players were welcomed with some proper pyro show, partly done by the kids as well.

And while the home team was trying, their rival was very effective winning 0-2. All in all a perfect derby day in non-league football!
